Support for Community Schools
Francisco Tamayo is fully supportive of implementing community schools within the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD). The pandemic has exacerbated long-standing disparities in educational outcomes, driving unprecedented learning loss for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. Francisco believes that community schools can increase equitable student learning outcomes by addressing the conditions for teaching and learning. By focusing on the needs of the whole child, community schools strengthen family and community foundations, offering approaches that sustain mental and behavioral health through healing-centered practices, social–emotional learning, and restorative justice.
Community schools also ensure that students, families, and community members are embraced as full partners in every aspect of decision-making that affects the conditions for teaching and learning. Francisco is committed to authentic power sharing and shared decision-making in all aspects of school governance, recognizing it as a cornerstone of community school implementation. He advocates for these inclusive practices to create an educational environment where all stakeholders collaborate to support student success. Through his dedication to community schools, Francisco aims to build a more equitable and supportive educational system for all students in CVESD.
